HOW TO CHOOSE A GREAT REFERENCE PHOTO
Generally speaking, the better the reference photo, the better the drawing.
However, many of my commissions are memorial portraits where the pet has already passed on and I can still do my best with difficult images.
Best case, though, is to start with a good reference photo where possible and that's why I've put together this useful guide on how to take the best photo of your pet which, in turn, will lead to a better portrait!
Here are my top tips:
Natural light is best - try to take the photo outside (ideally in slightly overcast weather), under cover or inside near a window
Make sure your camera or phone settings have the photo set as high resolution, the file should ideally be at 300dpi and at least 2-3MB in size
The photo needs to show lots of clear details, including detail and reflection in the eyes where possible - the eyes are key to a successful portrait!
Take the photo at the same level as your pet, not looking down at it, this perspective tends to work best
Make sure your pet is alert, attentive, looking at the camera if possible
Ensure there is nothing obstructing your pet in the photo so that all details are in clear view - this include hard shadows, furniture etc
For multiple pets, ideally all pets should be in the same photo. This ensures they are all seen from the same angle, with the same light source etc. This may not always be possible so if they are in separate photos, try and choose examples from similar angles and levels of detail etc - it really helps the end result!
Most importantly, the photo should really capture your pets character - in most cases I'm not able to meet the pet in person so I rely on your photos to get a sense of your pets personality!

Because of the high level of detail, each drawing can take between 20-40 hours to complete (per animal) and I can only take a limited number of commissions each year.
If you need a portrait before a specific date, like a birthday or by Christmas, get in touch as soon as possible to ensure I can fit it into my schedule. -
Express postage with tracking can be arranged and costs will vary dependant on shipping address.

In order to produce a highly detailed drawing to the best of my ability, I must have a clear, close up photograph for reference. It’s important that I can see the eyes clearly to be able to capture their personality. Photograph preferably taken from your pets eye level.
